The Daito fruit bat has a body length of approximately 20 cm and a wingspan of about 50 cm. Of all the fruit bats living in the Ryukyu archipelago, the Daito fruit bat is considered to be the most beautiful because of the golden fur that runs from its neck to its chest. During the day this nocturnal animal sleeps by itself or with others suspended from tree branches; during the night it eats nuts and young leaves. The breeding season of the Daito fruit bat lasts from May to June and only one baby is born to the parents.
If you know of any other endangered or rare plants or animals on Okinawa or the surrounding islands please send us what you know and pictures if possible. Thanks.
