This is a species of a genus of woodpecker that only inhabits Yambaru, a forested area in the northern part of the island of Okinawa. During the breeding season between April and June, it pecks a hole about 70 cm deep into the Itajii (type of local oak tree) where it lays one to three eggs. This hole can be used only once, so the woodpeckers make new holes every year. On winter night's Okinawa woodpeckers can be seen resting in the old holes. The population is estimated to only 100 to 200 birds. They are in danger of extinction.
If you know of any other endangered or rare plants or animals on Okinawa or the surrounding islands please send us what you know and pictures if possible. Thanks.
