STORK

STORK
(CRITICALLY ENDANGERED)

Storks hatch in Siberia or China and make rare visits to the Japanese islands during the winter. Although they bred in many places in Japan up until the Edo period, their numbers have declined sharply because of reckless hunting. The wild stork became extinct in 1971 when the last one was captured. This 110cm-long bird preys on fish or frogs on the shores. Breeding has been undertaken in Japan and has increased the population to more than 100 birds.
