The Last Lord of Okinawa Katsuren, Amawari.

Katsuren Castle in the distance.

Katsuren Castle.    Amawari was born in the village of Chatan Magiri Yara (present day Kadena City). A popular member of the local community, he used his unique talents in service to Katsuren Castle. Later the young Amawari established himself as the lord of Katsuren, replacing the 9th lord, Mochizuki. According to local history, he actively engaged in foreign trade, including some with the government of Japan, and brought great prosperity and glory to Katsuren.

Katsuren Castle steps to the top.    With his sights set on ruling Okinawa, Amawari attacked and defeated his old enemy Gosamaru (The battle of Gosamaru and Amawari, 1458). However, he was defeated in a subsequent battle by a force from Shuri during which Katsuren Castle was destroyed and never rebuilt.

Ichino-kuruwa (1st level)

Several archeological excavations of the first level (Ichino-kuruwa), have been conducted since 1965 which have lead to many discoveries. Apparently, building this castle was a large scale project. It entailed excavating down to the bedrock and subsequent construction of several buildings that had tiled-roofs. Although there are many castles on Okinawa, up until these excavations were done it was beleived that only the Shuri and Urasoe Castles had tiled-roofs.

Katsuren Castle.

Archeologists discovered the remnants of what might have been an arch, embossed with arabesque patterns on the site. This indicates that an ornately decorated arched gate may have existed between the first level and the second level.

An anthology of sacred and ceremonial songs, "Omoro-soshi", expresses Katsuren's prosperity in the following way:
What can Katsuren be compared to?
It may be compared to the prosperity of Kyoto and Kamakura.
What can the Noblemen of Katsuren be compared to?
So suitable for Katsuren
So suitable for the title "Nobleman".
Oh noble chieftain, Amawari
Amawari of Katsuren, rule this nation forever.
