Prefectural tree

English: Ryukyu Pine.
Locally: Ryukyu Matsu.
Geek Speak: Pinus Luchuensis Mayr.

Ryukyu Pine.

A full-grown Ryukyu Pine can reach a height of about 15 meters. As the years go by, the tree crown and spread out to show a graceful shape and is a great source of shade during the summer heat. It is often planted along roadsides. This is also commonly used in bonsai and windbreaks. This tree is very easy to care for which is great for guys like me whom aren't worldly renown for our green thumbs.

The old Ryukyu Government declared the Ryukyu Pine the prefectural tree on February 7th, 1966. Since the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972, the Okinawa Prefectural Government chose the Ryukyu Pine as its prefectural tree on October 26th, 1972.
